The purpose of this document is to give the reader a quick overview of the current telecom market. In general, traditional phone systems like Key Systems and Digital PBXs are going away and are being replaced by VoIP Phone Systems. The reasons they are being replaced are:
- They are not being manufactured anymore
- They are difficult and costly to maintain
- They are proprietary to the vendor not based on industry standards
- They lack advanced functionality
What is VoIP?
The acronym VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is important to note that VoIP does not mean Voice over the Public Internet. This is a common misconception. VoIP is digitized voice in a TCP/IP packet. That packet may or may not traverse the Public Internet.
-VoIP Phone Systems: VoIP Phone Systems come in two offerings: Premise based IP PBXs and Hosted (Outsourced) VoIP Services. Here is a brief explanation of each type:
- IP PBXs: They attach to the customer’s data network via an Ethernet interface card. Phones are IP with Ethernet ports that connect to the data network over existing Cat 5/5E/6x cabling. The IP PBX interfaces directly to the PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network) via Analog lines, Voice PRIs or SIP Trunks.
- Hosted VoIP: Hosted VoIP is an outsourced Phone Service. The customer installs IP phones and the provider brings in a T1 for converged Voice and Internet Services. The phone system is remote to the customer and is shared among many customers.
- Hybrid Telephone Systems: These types of phone systems seek to bridge the old and the new. They are a traditional Digital PBXs with an Ethernet card that allows IP phones to interface to them. These systems exist for the benefit of the manufacture because it allows them to perpetuate their install base of older phone systems while offering a limited amount of advanced functionality because of their proprietary operating systems.
